APRIL 2008

The Eighty-seventh General Assembly was a wonderful time to visit with our friends. While the weather was a bit chilly our members were warmed by all the activities and just being together.

The reports by the State Regents and National Chairmen told of the great work being accomplished by the Daughters of the American Colonists. I am always impressed with the many creative ideas that our members have.

Support of our active military and veterans is very important to our members.  The Veterans’ Committee project for this coming year is Operation First Response. This is preparing backpacks that can be given to a wounded soldier as they arrive at combat support hospitals in Iraq as well as Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany. When the wounded arrive, they only have what they are wearing. It can be a long period of time before their personal belongings arrive. These backpacks give them something to call their own. Included in the backpacks are personal care items, sweat suits, cot quilts and other items they can use. One member’s office co-workers chose to supply several backpacks instead of exchanging Christmas presents. This is a lovely way to share with others. Each chapter is being asked to prepare at least one backpack. Other members are having a special time to shop and pack the backpacks. This project gives joy twice – when created and when received.

Many JROTC/ROTC award medals have been presented. Savings bonds, books and other recognitions have been given to support the efforts of outstanding students. Encouragement of their hard work is an incentive for further efforts and accomplishments.

Patriotic Bookmarks have been given to hundreds of students.  These bookmarks tell of the symbols of the United States and stimulate a discussion of our country. Anytime we can encourage student to have an appreciation of The United States of America we are on the right track.

Our scholarships at 4 colleges are helping students continue their studies. These scholarships emphasize history and nursing are spread across the country.

During the General Assembly, I was given a cookbook created by the Children of the American Colonists. It is a delightful compilation of recipes and wisdom. One bit of information which piqued my curiosity was “Wedding cake is the most dangerous kind of cake”. You might want to contact them and obtain a copy.

Patriotism is the hallmark of our work. We support the things that make this Country strong. There are as many ways to do this as there are members. We encourage others to join us and become members of our group and enjoy the DAC friendship that makes us
