Text: (map of the Military Road to the top left of text)
“In the late 1850’s under the leadership of the Secretary of War Jefferson Davis, Military Road was constructed between Fort Vancouver and Fort Bellingham,
continuing north of Seattle, skirting the swamps of the Sammamish Slough. The portion of the road through Kenmore, Bothell and Woodinville eventually extended north along future Highway 9 to Fort Bellingham. Junior officers at the time of construction included George Pickett, George McClellan, Joseph Hook and Ulysses S. Grant. Local engineer Capt. W.W. Delacy with Native Americans and settlers surveyed the land between Seattle and Fort Bellingham. From 1912 to 1915, Greek and Italian immigrants laid red bricks over the old Military Road from Seattle to Bothell to facilitate travel for settlers, military, and commerce.
